This page is about the ancestors in our family who served in wars, starting with American Colonial militias to modern wars. We have many ancestors who served the US, and some who gave everything.
The picture to the left is the USS Lexington, the first ship of that name that served in the US Navy. Originally named the Wild Duck, Abraham van Bibber purchased her for the Maryland Committee of Safety, at St. Eustatius in the Dutch West Indies in February 1776. She soon got underway for the Delaware Capes and reached Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 9 March with a cargo of sorely needed gunpowder for the patriot forces. Four days later the Marine Committee purchased Wild Duck, renamed her Lexington after the Battle of Lexington (the first battle of the war), and turned her over to Wharton and Humphry for fitting out

According to the Index to Compiled Military Service Records; Alabama Tories: The 1st Alabama Cavalry, U.S.A.
Isaiah Lewis enlisted in the Union Army on December 7, 1863 at Camp Davies, Mississippi. Isaiah joined the 1st Alabama Cavalry, Company A because of his belief that it was not right for one person to own another person. Incidentally, just like in the Revolutionary War, Southerners who fought for the Union were known as “Tories”. Isaiah was mustered out on November 10, 1864, after he died from disease in Columbia, TN. This matches up well with other information we have that Isaiah died in Maury County, TN from typhoid fever.
Lewis Sharp to Alma Lewis to James Houston Lewis to William Jeptha Lewis to Isaiah Lewis to Peter Lewis (Isaiah’s brother)
Like Isaiah, Peter Lewis enlisted in the Union Army. He enlisted March 1, 1863 at Glendale, Mississippi for a period of 1 year. He joined Company D 1st Alabama Cavalry. He died in the Post Hospital in Corinth, Alcorn County, Mississippi of Continued Fever on April 15, 1863, only 46 days after enlisting.
Lewis Sharp to Alma Lewis to James Houston Lewis to Marilda Caroline Jeffreys to Jacob Jeffreys
Jacob served in Company K of the 42nd Regiment of Alabama Infantry. See the National Park Service’s Civil War pages for the Civil War record of the 42nd Regiment.
Lewis Sharp to Alma Lewis to James Houston Lewis to William Jeptha Lewis to Isaiah Lewis to Shadrack Lewis (Isaiah’s brother)
Unlike Isaiah Lewis and Peter Lewis, Shadrack Lewis (a younger brother) enlisted in the Confederate Army. He was a Private in Company H of 1st Patton's MS Infantry Regiment in Capt. John R. Wren's Company. The regiment's first major action was at the Siege of Corinth. By the time of the Battle of Nashville, the regiment had suffered heavy casualties and was under the command of Captain Owen Hughes who had previously been in command of Company K, known as the "Yankee Hunters". Hughes and most of the remaining regimental members were killed at Nashville, after which the regiment was used for rear guard actions until disbanding in 1865. Shadrack died during the war, but I do not know how.

Owen Sanders was a private in Nash’s Company, Leake Rangers. John Nash was the captain of this company. I can’t find any official records of the service of this Company.
